Default Heater vent selector not working on a 1980...

hey everyone,

A friend of mine has a 1980. When he turns on the blower motor air comes out of his floor vents (by your feet) and sliding the selector switch to any other setting does not change anything. When sliding the selector you can hear the vacuum at the switch changing (you can hear sucking/hissing noises at the switch). I removed the side cover from the console and reached back and removed the vacuum connector from the switch. I could feel strong vacuum at one of the ports when the engine is running so the switch appears to be receiving vacuum from the engine.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

Edit: I'm looking for ways to further test the system, be it with a vacuum gauge, or ways to test the slide switch. he does have the factory manual, but it has little more than a vacuum diagram and no troubleshooting that I've found.

thanks again!

Mine was giving me similar problems awhile back. Wouldn't change modes very quickly. I fixed mine by removing the whole unit from the console and then removing the vacuum selector valve. I then cleaned up everything, gave the mating surfaces a fresh coat of silicone grease, and all has been well since. Same trick might work for you, too.

If you press the switch together front to back, it should work.

The vac. switch itself is not switching due to vac. leak as the usually plastic rivet is not holding the 2 main switch parts together well. Besides replacing, it is also possible to tighten this &/or lube w/ a thin layer of white lithium grease or vasoline to fix.

Thanks guys for all the help -

I should note that the selector switch is brand new. His radio was stolen not too long ago and the a$$ holes broke the heater control switched as well.

But, I think you're all on to something - I can hear hissing coming out of the switch, it's probably not creating enough vacuum to actuate the flaps. Funny thing is when I hold the switch plates together to stop the hissing, the flaps still don't move.

thanks for the advice so far!
