FRP and SMC body panels
When did Corvettes start using SMC panels, and stop using FRP panels? I have one source that says Chevrolet started using SMC panels in 1971 on the Corvette (rear quarter and end panels?) and another that says in 1966 that SMC was used for front panels and hood.
Anyone have a reference on this?
The reason I'm asking is because I need to repair some panels, and don't want to be using normal fiberglass mat and resin on SMC panels.
Furthermore, Eckler's says that it's fiberglass repair materials are only good through 1972. Is that because they started using a spray undercoating (for sound absorption I think) in 1973?
Argh, I'm confused.
John Hinckley just wrote an article for Corvette Enthusiast (October 05) that describes the evolution of Corvette plastic. His article states that Corvette parts began to show up in 74 with SMC but his reference I believe is the entire body. Seems I recall some parts began to show up earlier as you indicate...heard that from a plant engineer.
If you wish to dialog with John and others who were around at the time, I would suggest joining the CPRL (The Corvette Restoration and Preservation List) which is for pre-C4 Corvettes. It's a no nonsense forum and deals with issues of originality and production methods...no atars, pretty picture signatures and advertisers. Here's the link:
