Transmission leak.
A couple days ago I posted about a mystery red fluid leaking from my car. The forum consensus was that I had a leaky rear transmission seal. I managed to wedge my butt under the vette last night and took a look at the back of the transmission. It didn't appear that it was the seal that was leaking, but a connecting line into the transmission on the driver’s side. I could see a couple of exposed threads with a few drops of transmission fluid on them. Please refer to the pic for the location I mean (it is not an actual pic of my car, but a random image I found on the net and modified to meet my needs).
It was a big pain in the rear to tighten it down since my robogrip probably wasn't the best tool to use for the job, but I managed to get it pretty tight. There was no Teflon tape or anything on the threads, so my question is there should there be something of that nature there? I want to make sure that the connector doesn't unthread itself again in the future. I checked my fluid and then took it for a short drive. I will check tonight to make sure it isn't still leaking. Any thoughts are as always much appreciated.
You probably have a leak there and need to replace the o-ring and seal for the speedo driven gear housing. Also check the speedo gear for a wear groove. Replace if necessary .

Does that involve removing the tail housing to my automatic transmission? If so I would assume that this would be a real chore. Nonetheless I have always found the best way to learn things is to get my hands dirty. Any specifics on how to accomplish this would be appreciated. Also, should I be expecting a lot of transmission fluid to come out when I remove the speedo cable?
I just changed the speedo seal on my 73, it was actually a lot easier than I thought it'd be. You can get the seal from any chevy dealer for under $3. tranny hasn't leaked a drop since
my cable wasn't really that loose when I took it off so I didn't think there'd be any problems with it coming loose on its own. I just cleaned all the parts up as much as I could and tightened it back down.
You're lucky. I just figured out mine is leaking from one of the hard-line fittings where it attaches to the trans. It was a small drip, but now it's really gushing out
