I bought a '72 a few weeks ago that does not have a mirror on the driver's side and there are no holes for one. I bought a mirror and mounting hardware and now I am trying to figure out where exactly to drill the holes in my door. Can someone help me? If I could get the measurements of how many inches back from the front of the door and how many inches down the mirror should be mounted, I ought to be able to get close.
I removed the drivers side mirror and made a template out of thick paper since the mounting hole pattern is the same for both sides. I trimmed it to match the front door edge and the chrome door trim at the bottom of the window. Then, I marked where the existing driver's side holes are. Now you can transfer your template to the pass door, line it up on the front door edge and window trim, and mark the new holes. You should have gotten well nuts with you new mirror since there is no back plate for the mirror on the pass side like there is on the driver's side so your holes will be larger diameter. Drill with the window up and be careful since you just want to drill through the door skin and not into the door panel. Now insert the well nuts and mount the mirror and your done!
Thanks for the tip but my problem is that it is the drivers side door. The Passenger side doesn't have a mirror either. I don't know if the original screws broke off and someone bondoed over them or if they replaced the skin and didn't drill out the holes. If someone could give me some rough dimensions I think I can get pretty close by using those and lining up the contour of the new mirror with the contour of the door.

I think you miss understood what he said, he doesn't have a mirror on the drivers door but is trying to install one.
A photo is not going to do you any good. You've got to have measurements. So, here is what I've got for you. At the top of the door is a small strip of chrome that runs the length of the door. It's where the glass goes down into the door when it is rolled down. The leading edge of the mirrow base is 6 3/8" from the front edge of that peice of chrome. That same leading edge of the mirrow base is 1 5/8" down from the chrome strip. I hope this makes a little sense to you. To give you a better idea of the location of mine, the mirrow frame almost lines up perfectly with my steering wheel.
Thanks a million! My car now has a mirror. I was also able to hang the inside rear view mirror this weekend so now I have a good view of everything behind me.
