Default power steering cylinder

putting new seals in my p-steering cylinder but
the sealkit is a bit different compared with the old one

so i have no idea in what order i have to put seals:

1= leather ring ( with a --> / edge

2 = copper ( fits on one side perfectly onto the leather one)

3= rubber

any idea in what order i have to put these rings

the old one had 2 rubber seals inside (still on the shaft)

my first guess first install the rubber (3) , the leather (1) and on top the copper (2) one?
second guess: install first the leather, then the copper and last the rubber seal?

tia

3-4-1-2. 1 and 2 are wipers to keep the shaft clean. 4 holds the seal square.

The seal and scraper package that you purchased was actually used from 1963 through 1977 on the Corvette assist cylinder. A new three piece seal and scraper package went into production around 1978.

It is interesting that your cylinder had the more recent seal package than the service kit that you purchased. Either package installs into the same cavity in the cylinder. As I remember, there wasn't a real problem with the original seal and scraper design. The three piece design utilized a urethane scraper that was a bit less expensive.

Here is a link that shows both seal packages. Unfortunately, the detail on your seal package leaves a lot to be desired.

Mike is correct as to the order. The copper piece should be on the outside and its edge should be pushing crud off of the cylinder rod. The leather seal behind it should be doing the same thing.

Make sure that you install the oil seal in the correct direction. The metal face should be pointing out. The sealing end with the garter spring should be toward the pressurized oil.

thanks , this make things clear to me

was already wondering if they had put 2 piston rod seals on the shaft.
my vette is an early 78 ( build late 1977) .. but looking at the condition (rust) of the cylinder i won't be surprised if it had already been replaced before .

thought the O-ring was put in the kit by mistake .. but on the document (link) i can see now it is for the ball stud side.

btw.. what kind of oil should i use for the powersteering... i have heard ATF can be used?

thanks again
