Default Engine alignment.

my fan has always been too close to the shroud on the right hand side.

The water pump shaft and center of the crank are about 7/8" to the right from the center of the hole in the frame crosmember.

does that sound right?

yes the engine is offset to the pass side but it's supposed to be 2" if I'm not mistaken

Two inches off center of the frame sound right - I can check the schematic when I get home later. However, the hole in the frame might not be in the center either. I know the radiator and surround area are not exactly centered either.
Have you got a metal shroud or plastic one? Does the fan actually hit the shroud? If you have a metal shroud you might be able to "align" the shroud slightly if the fan actually hits. If it's not hitting, no problem!!

Sounds like you have a left engine mount broken; which is quite common. The engine is offset to the right but the fan doesn't hit the shroud unless something is wrong. Replace your engine mounts and it should fix your problem.

I'll look thru my assembly manual to see if it has a spec.

I've always had problems over the past 25 years with the fan closer to the shroud on the right hand side. I don't know if its the motor mounts, shroud, or if the motor mount braces are bent or the whole frame is bent.

I'm replacing the radiator right now and want to get it worked out. I can offset the shroud some to the right side but the fan is still very close to the radiator hose.

did you ever wreck the car? If not it's unlikely the frame is ebnt unless it's rusting badly or some seam has cracked open somewhere (which would be very visible) maybe it's the shroud itself but then again..you don't know if it's the motor moutns? Don't tell me you have never replaced those in 25 years?

The engines offset to the right. I remember this since Aussys have to deal with that on a conversion.
