Default electric fan conversion

The fan shroud for my 1980 vett was in bad shape so I installed two 12in. electric fans. I have 3 questions. (1) Do I need to have any part of the old shroud to direct air flow? (2)Just wondering if those of you who have made the swith are happy with your decision? (3) Any advice about hooking the fans up to a thermostatically controled switch?

Most people hook the fans to come on with thermostats and also to come on when the A/C is turned on. Most people leave the shrouds off but I installed mine because I kept the original engine fan too.

Get a painless wiring kit. They have them specific for the dual electric fans. All wiring and relays included.

I rough wired my fans in for testing and am using the painless for finished product. Here is a picture of a kit http://i21.ebayimg.com/03/i/04/03/4b/77_1_b.JPG

I like the idea of the wireing kit. Where do I get it? How much? etc.

hey Bobby,
I did the swap to electric fan, not use'n my shroud, it's do'n fine for me. but our front's are not the same, 80's may not let in as much air as my 79 with a pacecar spoiler does.(the spoiler help more the anything)
I used a perma-cool 16 in. fan and a few relays.
I got the cheep-o thermostat switch for it from summit $20 (PRM-19001). strap's to the up'er rad hose. cheezy but it work's.
One relay to run the fan all the time, hooked to key on power....one to the thermostatically controled switch it. run's the fan when it's hot enuff to need it and after i kill the car. (think'n about removing it)
If i had two like you i'ed hook one to the key on...run all the time.
And one for a/c and when it up to 200 or more.

Default get some opinions

My fans are now on as long as the ignition is on. I am trying to decide the best option for long term hook up. I have thought about putting the fans on seperate sources in case one fails. I certainly want at least on to be connected to a thermostat. Some have suggested on to come on when the A/C is engaged. And I guress one option to to have the thermostat fan hooked up to a constant power source so the fan will run after the car is turned off.

Like to know what you think.

There is a new controller from SPAL that is really slick. I put one in my 69 with Dual Spals and it has 2 set points - the low point turns on the first fan at 50%, the high then turns both on until the temp drops, then it scales the fans back again.

Tom Dewitt has the best price in the world right now!

If you do a search on SPAL on the forum, I have posted details and pictures.
