Default thoughts on headers.......

While i was replacing broken motor mounts yesterday, i had to remove the headers that were installed on my car. I have the stock ramhorns to replace them with. My question is, how much of a power loss will i see if i go back to ram horns, over staying with the headers? The headers that were on there were some type of long tube design, and were flaking off their coating, and they made a ton of heat. If i go with the stock manifolds will heat still be a huge issuse?

no
just use some header wrap on the headers you got right now and put them back in

You will lose between 10 and 15HP, Depending on your engine spec.

I have a stock 76 L-48 with the exeption of performer intake and carb. the car does not seem too powerful to begin with. I am worried if i do the switch it will be even slower , another question if i would swap out vortec heads, will the headers still bolt up to those, or will they have to be changed?

Suggest that you reinstall the headers, wrap them if the heat is bothering you and focus on the downstream exhaust: cat and muffler.

If I recall correctly, 76s used retarded timing to meet emissions standards. You may be able to improve performance with a recurved distributor.

If you are not worried about emissions, remove the air pump.

You probably have a 3.08 or 3.36 rear end. A swap to 3.55 or higher will wake up your acceleration.

The airpump is gone, so is the cat, it has true duals. I may end up just swapping engines. Today i had a coworker offer me a 383 steel crank, steel rods, forged pistons. in shortblock form. It is brand new never ran. and if i do that it should fix my acceleration problem. the problem i was having with heat though is it was getting so hot under the hood with headers on, that it was causing my carb to vaporlock. It even did this with a phenolic carb spacer, so i was looking for any out. thanks for all your input.

Your headers will work with Vortec heads, but you need a Vortec style intake manifold & self aligning rocker arms. All that works well on my 383.

I hope its a post 87 edelbrock product, because i have one and it has only the 8 bolts holding it on, and the angle is different where it meets the head. If it would work that would save me buying a new one
