I installed my new shifter this weekend and everything went well except the adjustment of the reverse arm linkage. I followed the instructions and had all gears in neutral and the reverse gear lever forward towards the input shaft in the disengaged position. I inserted the little white shaft stop that lines up all of the arms on the bottom of the shifter. Gear 1-4 connect up and work great. the reverse rod however will not attach into the shifter arm while all 3 arms are lined up. My kit came with 2 different length rods but neither line up. the only way I could get the rod button into the arm was to remove the plastic stop rod and then let the long arm coming out of the shifter slide back. Then I was able to fit the button at the end of the rod into the shifter arm.
Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas of how to fix it?
Also want to add that I have adjusted the button on the reverse rod to every possible possition. When it is screwed all the way in and the shifter arms are lined up with the plastic stop the button is still short of the whole that the button fits into.

I don't think anything has changed in the manufacture of the Comp + 4-Speed Shifter, but I didn't do it that way. I used the white alignment tool in the slot and adjusted all the linkage while in neutral. After having everything working, I adjusted the stop bolts. You will have to use some effort to counter the spring tension and get past the 1-2 pattern and into reverse. You may be reading too deep into the directions. Without my glasses I couldn't read the directions and maybe that helped. Try aligning everything while in neutral and with the pin in place. BTW, a nail works fine as well. This is the only way I have ever adjusted them. Below is a picture of how the linkage should look.

Sorry my description was probably bad. essentially what you are saying is what I did. I had the shifter in the neutral position which had all 3 of the levers on the shifter in a line so I could insert the plastic stop.
As a rough starting point the instructions had me screw the black pins that attatch the rods to the shifter levers half way onto the threaded part of the rod. this gave me a good base line for 1-4 and I got those adjusted fine.
For reverse the pin was about a 1/2 to the right of the reverse lever hole if you are looking at the side of the shifter. I screwed the reverse pin all the way up on the rod and it still is far enough to the right of the reverse lever hole that I cannot attach the linkage rod to the reverse lever. It looks like either the rod is 2 long and like I said the kit came with 2 or it was not threaded far enough up, or the rod needs to be bent.
According to the directions I should have been able to connect the linkage rods with the shifter in neutral and all levers lined up and locked with the plastic rod into the reverse lever while the reverse gear is in the disengaged position which would be forward torwards the input shaft.
BlackRat, if everything is in neutral, with the alignment pin all the way in and your reverse rod is too long, maybe it is. What happens when you try to install the second reverse rod? The key is having everything in neutral, you say it is, so the correct rod must fit. If after going over everything to be sure you are not in error, I have found myself in error many times, contact Mr Gasket for the correct rod. You might be able to run a die down the rod and cut more threads, but I'd call or email Mr Gasket first. http://www.hurst-shifters.com/ If that shifter is for a Muncie the rod should be the correct length.
I believe there is a part number stamped on the reverse shifter rods. The one you want should be stamped 213 2146 if you have a Muncie. The BW number is 213 4147.
