My next dumb question to you guys is since I dont have any of the original plug wire conduits should I run the spark plug wires over the top of the valve covers and route them down to the spark plugs or can I still route the wires inside the manifold area and wrap them in wiring conduit? How exactly were the original wire routed? I am not doing a professional restoration just creating a super clean street driving car hopefully. Thanks for all the help you guys provide.
You can route the wires either way (your choice), but I believe it's easier to buy some wire looms and route them over the valve covers. By doing so, you can also buy shorter wires (or make your own to custom fit).
my wires look like boofers except I have stock manifolds and they look worse. Can you use wire looms over the valve covers with stock manifolds? It seems like you have to bring plug wires under the manifolds.
Since I don't like the appearance of all those wires hanging over the valve covers, I just made a small aluminum bracket to hold the rear two wires on each side. The bracket contains a small wire clip which positions the wires. The engine mounts hold the front wires. Easy and cheap...
Too cool...Billet Specialties is just an hour away from me. Gonna buy me some tonight!!! Great looking looms....
Thanks
Eddie
Eddie,
If you have L82 valve covers like mine you will need longer valve cover bolts because the mounting tabs for those looms are pretty thick. I believe I had to use 1 1/2" bolts to make everything work with my AFR heads.
You might also notice that the #1 wire is routed behind the header tube. The looms were actually much longer when I bought them and had the #1 and #2 wires routed in front of the header tubes, but the AC compressor and alternator bracket made that routing impossible. I simply cut the front extension off of both looms even with the mounting tab.
If you have to cut yours just be careful not to scratch them up while cutting (like I did on one of them).
