Default Need to replace my HEI with something new.....

I'm just about done with my 383 install, and was thinking of replacing the original HEI distributor with something new. The Crane street/strip electronic distributor caught my eye, it's on page 104 in the Jeg's catalog. It has no springs or weights, and has 36 preprogrammed curves that can set by twisting a dial. It says it has an optical trigger but can use a magnetic trigger, I'm not really sure exactly what that means. Is a direct replacement for my '77's HEI system? Do I need or should I also get an ignition box? Any suggestions for other distributor's if the one isn't a good choice? Thanks in advance

I have one of these distributors. The distributor itself is optically triggered but must be used along with a magnetically triggered ignition box like the Crane Hi-6 or Hi-6R. You also have to have an external coil such as the LX-92. It's a good choice but kinda pricey. MSD has a new unit which operates the same but everything is built into the distributor, nothing else to buy. It is cheaper also (pricewise).

I'm not sure if your tach will hook up to the Crane distributor, if that matters to you.

Pertronics Flame Thrower is an awsome upgrade. Comes with different springs to tune to your setup. 50,000+ sparks. Plug and play can't be beat for $200.

No, it won't be a daily driver or used for long trips. Just cruising locally a few nights a week and some drag strip passes

Older than dirt- do you have a part number for the MSD unit? I'd like to look into it

Thanks for the link. I think I'll go with the MSD, much easier with everything built in. The price is very reasonable at $349 from Jeg's. I'll have to ask Gkull how he likes it too
