Default L48 Performance Upgrade

Am contemplating a performance upgrade for my 73 L48. Would like to get about 300-350 horses and better torque. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Got about 3K to spend. Told a Comp Cams Hi-Energy 268 cam and appropriate lifters, Edelbrock Performer RPM/EPS intake manifold, matching cylnder heads from Edelbrock and long tube exhaust headers with 2 and 1/4 pipes and Flowmaster 40's, mufflers will do it. Also an MSD 6A ignition box and MSD distibutor. This all be done within budget with a little room to spare for cost overrun. Would like the car to turn around 14.0- 14.2 1/4 mile at about 100 MPH. Car has AC. Any comments or suggestions. Thanx in advance

Well my '79 L48 regularly makes trips down the quarter under 14 seconds. I drive it to the track, bolt on my slicks and last Sunday my 1st run was 13.92 at 97 mph.

Thats done with stock heads too. I only have an Edelbrock Performer cam, quadrajet carb (reworked by Lars), Performer Intake, I've added an MSD 6AL and I recurved the distributor as well. It has Dynamax Ceramic coated headers.

I've also studied some of Lars papers on performance tuning and that stuff really works. This is a sweet and consistant package and I know I did not spend $3000 doing it.

However, I am currently building a BBC for it and hope to end up with 460 horse on pump gas. See the need for speed never really ends. Faster breeds faster and faster.

I just had that cam installed. Along with the dart/summit heads, edlebrock performer intake & carb, headers into 2.5" true duals with magnaflow mufflers. Its also got a 2500 stall tc. The car runs awesome.I wanted an xe series cam or the voodoo cam.The mechanic that ported the heads said the he268h would be best. I`m glad I listened to him. Good luck with your build.

I'm not out to dis on Comp Cams but you might want to do a search in this forum on them and the cam before committing. Trust me, you'll come up with a LOT of posts about that cam.

It is the XE line (extreme energy) cams that seem to have the problems

Has anyone installed a Holley or Edelbrock performance package that includes matched intake, heads, timing chain, cam?
