Default Brake Light and Turn Signal Problem

I have a problem with my 76. My right hand brake and signals work great but the left hand has a strange problem. If I step on the brakes I get brake lights on both sides, If I turn on the parking lights or the left hand turn signal and step on the brake the left side goes out, but the right side works fine. the ground for the light is good I even ran a wire from the tail light to the neg on battery. I also noticed that some times the left hand directional indicator light on the cluster is on even if the switch is off with key on. I have looked at the wiring diagram and it looks to me the turn signal switch is bad. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Kurt

I don't know if I really understand all that is happening, but I wouldn't tear into the turn signal switch. I would look for simpler things such as the bulbs. I have seen filaments in bulbs break off and touch the other filament in the bulb causing havoc. I remember pulling my hair out trying to diagnos. Also make sure the correct bulb types are installed and they are name brands.

I had a similiar problem on a '77. Turned out to be a bad socket and a bad bulb. I am not sure my combination was exactly the same but it sounds similiar. Pretty easy and cheap to try a new socket and bulb first. Should be available at local auto parts store. Got mine at Kragen's.

I had a similar situation on my 77 as well. Turned out to be a loose wire lug on one of the brake light bulb sockets. Hope the fix comes easy to you
