Default Ignition cylinder spinning...?

For some reason, my ignition cylinder has decided it doesn't need the key inserted any longer to turn. I can spin the cylinder 360 without the key. Car doesn't start (ignition doesn't turn on), but it ain't right. If I insert the key, I can start the car, but it takes some "jiggling" to get it right.

What parts do I need to replace and how do I get to the "guts" of the ignition cylinder?

You didn't mention the year but shouldnt matter.
Theres a hole next to where the key goes in. With the key in push a pin or some other small rod like object in the hole. The key mechanism will come out.

This just takes the locking part out not the whole ignition switch.

The hole in the chrome part of the ignition lock cylinder is only on the ones that were installed in the instrument panel (before 1969).

The lock cylinders that are installed in the steering column head do not have a hole and require that you partially disassemble the steering column in order to remove the ignition lock cylinder. It requires that you remove the steering wheel and hub. Then you need to remove the locking plate. Remove the three screws that hold the turn signal switch and pull the switch up and out of the way so that you can reach the spring loaded tab and remove the lock cylinder.

It is not a particularly difficult procedure. If your problem is with a 1969 steering column (or later), I have fairly complete instructions posted at www.corvettefaq.com The procedure is just a bit different depending if you have a T&T column or a standard (non-adjustable) type.

I'll check out the article.

Thanks.
