Actually my wife is the one that asked about this. When she's driving her 1973, she wants it to accelerate without hesitation - on demand - without any hesitation... like it does now with the stock tranny.
This will already be slowed down a bit by being in overdrive gear - and don't want to add an additional step in there as well (TC unlock).
Maybe I should ask if the TC locks in any other gear than OD? (If not, than I don't see a lockup TC as being a problem then).
But, to see if I understand the answer, a stock TC will mate up to a 700R and 200R tranny ?
I thought I read about a problem, either with the splines or thickness of the stock TC not liking the 200/700 tranny
teach your wife to downshift the auto if she wants more response. there will always be a stupid delay when she stomps on the accelerator while it downshifts... and then possibly downshifts again once the engine puts more load on the transmission.
Here's the deal. With the OD tranny you'll find you keep it in 3rd except on the freeway. But in any case, you're gonna find the 200-4R much more responsive than the old slushbox...
Mike,
I have a friend that has the lockup convertor and he dissconnected it. I told him he should at least put a switch on his consol to engage it when he is crusing the interstates. The lockup allows the torque and tranny to run more efficiently and cooler, so if you have it I would use it. I'm swapping my TH350 auto (which is a great tranny) to get rid of the weight and heat the auto creates; plus put more fun into driving. If I were going to a 4 speed auto I would get the 2004R; lighter, direct replacement, more efficient.
