After reading a good article by Herb Adams and talking to Twin Turbo I decided to install a rear sway bar. Being nose heavy my car would tend to understreer anyway. Fitting a bar is not easy with the big tires and 6 ½ inch offset rims. I also further complicate it with fuel filters and twin pumps mounted in this area.
I decided to go with a speedway bar and arms , like the front and install the bar by welding mounting plates to the rear crossover frame directly behind the removable cross member. The widest speedway bar made is 43 inches. I went with 1 ¼ OD and .187 wall.
I won’t go into details because it only pertains to my car and it’s problems with mounting.
Here are a few pictures of the installation.
Norval,
Have you had an opportunity to see if it helped with the understeer yet?
Bernie
Thanks Chris. I was desperate to find something to work on
Bernie I have not driven the car yet. I intend to do that now but only a very short drive to settle the suspension and then adjust the rod ends so there is no preload on the bar.
I have considered weighing the car on all 4 wheels then try adjusting the bar to shift weight from side to side but not sure if that is acceptable.
I will go to a vacant paved lot and try pushing it around a few hard turns to see if it oversteers or not.
I just took the car for a run. It is definitly stiffer. I will have to get use to the increases ride harshness. I did throw it around a corner at 60 mph and it felt like the rearend might come around. Being on a public road with ditches bothered me and since I had no drivers licence with me I felt I shouldn't use the paved vacant lot at the local high school. That is where I want to really try it. No ditches and lots of open space and it is located in the country, far from surrounding homes.
The arms start out 3 times that long, solid and weigh alot. By the time I am done they are about 2 1/2 pounds.
