Default 700r4 What Temperature

Those of you with 700r4 transmissions with fluid temperature gauges, what will your fluid temperature spike too? And how long will it stay there? BTO would like the temperature to stay below 180 degrees. I have installed an auxillary cooler with fan. On a hot day when aggressive with the transmission or in park with no air flow through radiator it wants to heat up over 180. Other than that normally the temp. is 160 to 170 degrees. The engine temp. runs steady about 190 all the time. Was curious how my temperatures compares to others.

THANKS for any replys

I got a 700r4 and I am using a decent sized trans cooler and running a 2500 stall. on cooler days it never goes above 160 but on 90 and up days it creeps to 170.

I wish I could say that my 200-4R would stay that cool. It runs fine at 150-160*F if I am driving but sitting in traffic I have seen it climb to 200*F. The minute I start moving it drops back down.

Nope its the thicker 4 core type. Also I got rid of the clutch fan and I am running a single 17" electric fan off a 94 lincon continental.

It is not a 700, but a 400, however, the information may still be of some use.

The 4200rpm stall generates a fair amount of heat. I am using B&M's biggest stack-plate cooler and the operating temperature is from 160-180 degrees with normal driving/highway speeds. It will quickly heat up to 210 degrees if driven hard.

I have had it over 260 degrees at the race track. I anticipated the heat that would be generated from the converter and used RedLine High Temp ATF that will not burnish, even near 400 degrees. The result is a 150,000 mile tranny that has taken over 100 passes at the drag strip and a lot of hard street miles, with temps over 260 degrees (my gauge only reads this high), and hasn't missed a beat yet.

However, the TH400 is one tough brute, if it was a 700R4 I may be singing a different tune...

Yes, I ran the line to the cooler and then through the rad and back to the trans.

I am told to go rad first, then cooler, which makes more sense to me...

I finally did change it over to the above, instead of just the cooler....

I bypassed the rad when I added a tranny cooler. I figured all I was doing was getting the temp to whatever the temp was in the rad, otherwise. I am in the process of replacing the TH350 with a 5 speed stick to eliminate all the temp issues.

Thanks, I will give it a try. I just have to swap the hoses to the trans lines.
