I need the center to center and/or overall length of the driveshaft used in the 1982 Vette with automatic transmission (only one offered). I have no way to easliy get under there and measure today, and can't seem to find the info anywhere on-line. Thanks
I think it is 26,5 but I can measure it this weekend..not sooner.
Twin Turbo,
Thanks. Please wait and see what other responses we get before you get down under. I now found out I have to go out of town for the weekend, starting tomorrow, so no hurry anymore. The reason I asked is I may have one available and it's 29" overall and about 27.5" center to center. It's aluminum, so I don't think it will work. 82's used only steel, and they are hard to get. I'll probably have a new trunion (is that correct?) welded on the thing, since the old one is a tiny bit loose around the u-joint bearing caps. Can't cost too much, if I can find a place near Lansing to do it. Either that or JB-Weld

27.5 is too long because that's what I need for my ZF6 speed, the 82 one is shorter. What year did the driveshaft come out of? a C4..since it's alu? Interesting.....I can easily get C4 shafts here.
Dunno. I have a friend with a tranny shop and he said it was out of, what he thought, was an 82. But he wasn't sure, and I kinda knew it wouldn't fit, but tried positive thinking. I found a local who does custom drive line work - estimated a complete rebuild and balance at about $200. Seems high, but maybe not. For some reason, the one-off 82 shafts are non-existant (maybe because they are one-off).
I'll try to find out for sure what it came out of. It's in excellent condition, and maybe it will fit your needs. For some reason he had both the yoke and shaft replaced, when only the yoke was scored. Go figure.

Super. You all make this forum worth it. If you don't hear more from me until Sunday night or Monday it's because I forgot I had to go to my class reunion (ain't saying which one) in the little town of Frankenmuth, MI. If the driveline holds up and I don't drink too much beer, I'll be back then. Huge classic car show up there this weekend, too. That's why I'm risking the 100 mile drive with a chatty driveline. Heck, my Ford has sounded like that for 125K - What am I worried about??
there are a couple of corvette junk yards in michigan . they may have what you need .
Yup, and I'm going to probably need one, since we determined that the real noise was coming from a likely chipped tooth in the differential. Not such a bigh deal if it wasn't so hard to get out.. Darn!
