Got a 76 really looking to get a 4-speed or even 5-speed in instead of the auto. What is a good tranny to go with? Anyone got any advice on how difficult and exspensive it would be.

This topic has been covered quite a bit, I don't mean to be rude, but you should first try using the forum search function. But to answer your question Tremec and Richmond are two of the most popular. There are also a couple of companies such as Keisler and Classic Chevy 5 speed that sell kits. You can count on spending between 3-5K if you do the install yourself.
Not to just chime in but, holy hell 3-5k For a manual! I was thinking about the converting my Auto to a Manual but I think that cost will drive me to enjoy not shifitng!
Yep. I was gonna say to budget $4,000. Mine was $3,500 and it was just a 4-speed to 5-speed swap...already had all the pedals and stuff.
Remember, there's a lot more than just a tranny and pedals to change... You'll need, at minimum: shifter/handle, console, flywheel, bellhousing, clutch disk/pressure plate, clutch linkage, pedal/bracket, driveshaft, u-joints, crossmember/mounting mods, and THEN a tranny. Oh yeah, the rear gears may need to change, too...
I think that you could do it much cheaper by using a late 80s Camaro T5 trans setup. They are cheap and easy to find. The hardest part is finding the Corvette pedals and installing it. But you could easily do the conversion for less than $1500. Most parts with the exception of the flywheel can be gotten from the Camaro. You can use the hydraulic clutch setup and starter from that car. Your auto trans yoke and driveshaft from the vette will work on the T5. Just order a flywheel and fabricate a trans mount and clutch master mount. As long as you do not have tons of horsepower, you should be okay with the 5 speed. I did one recently and am happy with it. Hey, I too want a Keisler or a Richmond, but with my budget, it ain't gonna happen.

Reason: added info
I bought a complete t5 setup from an 84 camaro for just under a 1k. I thought I had a set of pedals from ebay until some jerk took them at the last minute for 91 bucks . I'm going to buy my clutch pedal from ecklers and modify my brake pedal. All said and done I'm expecting to come in under 1500.
Keep doing research on the Internet, more and more options for you out there. Keilser and Classic Chevy 5-Speed are options for you to look at but call them both on phone to talk one on one for details
Also other options for Tremec 5-speeds from other companies but you will probably have to cut the car (nothing wrong with that if its ok with you and your car) and not get same details/help for installation.
Good luck, keep doing home work and go with what is best for you.
go with the keisler 5 spd. it is hands down the best thing ive ever done to my car. and they can supply you with all the junk youll need to swap from at to mt. ive heard rumors that the new guys selling this kit is a cheap knockoff of keisler, and are harder to get working...02
