Default 69 Upper Radiator Hose

I've been looking into getting a new upper radiator hose for my 69 BB. When I look in all the catalogs there are two listed for 69. One says for 390 and 3x2 and the other says for 69 with PS. What is the difference between the two, other than the shape. Did something change in 69 that caused the change in hose. My problem is that I have a 390 with PS so I am not sure which one to get. Also I see that one of them is available cheap and the other one is not. Can someone fill me in.

Default I just ordered .. yet another one~!

I just ordered another one! I recently put in a DeWitts direct fit radiator. The problem is that the hose is very close to the alternator. In fact mine slipped and I wore a hole in it! Also the one I got from a "supplier" did not fit exactly. So today I ordered one from DeWitts. I am hopeful. Sorry I could not offer any more help. Might want to check them out at DeWitts.com..?

I am running into this same problem with the upper hose on my 454. I may be ordering a new hose soon... I just noticed that my hose got into the pulley a little bit. Not leaking yet though....

I had the same problem of the radiator hose being too close to alternator pulley on my 69 and 73 big blocks. On the 73, I finally loosened the radiator support bolts (3 on each side in the fender wheelwells and the bolts to the lower crossmember) and forced the radiator and support forward enough to solve the problem.

Also, see if there are too many washers on the bolts that mount the supports for the alternator and PS pump to the block. Sometimes they were used as spacers and get these units too far forward. Removing some or all of the washers can gain you a little space.

But my question was whats the difference between the two styles, and are they interchangable.

If you aren't after originality, you might look at a Cool Flex hose. They last longer than a standard hose, you can bend them to shape and cut them to length.

They are not interchangeable. The one for the 3x2 has a different angle bend in it due to the different water neck on the manifold. If you try to use one in place of the other you will get a kink in the hose.

Here is a picture I borrowed from the Zip website

Jay

But the one claims to be for a 390 and a 3x2 and the other for a 427. How am I supposed to know which one to use?

Good question. All of the Big Blocks were 427's in 69. The different HP ratings were not as much of a factor in determining the correct hose as which options are installed. Generally, as I understand it, if you have a 3x2 then buy the 3x2 hose otherwise buy the other one.

If you give Tom Dewitt a call he will be able to set you straight. He sells the reproduction hoses and they are a little cheaper than Zip, Ecklers, etc.
