Default Is my fuel pump bad?

The car is leaking a good amount gas from next to the RF wheel and there is a strong gas smell around the car sometimes. Sometimes it won't smell of gas at all. When the car is cold, I need to give it gas while I'm crankin the starter or it won't start. Until the car gets to the normal temp, it is very hesitant. When the car is warm, it runs and idles fine under normal drivin conditions, but if you get on it (like I do every once in a while), the car will respond but at about 3500-3800rpm the rpms will drop and the car will stall. Then the car is extremely hard to get started. When I do get it started, the car runs fine, but I get a strong smell of gas. Also, if I drive the car and get it completely warmed up, then park for an hour or so, the car is extremely hard to start and will stall multiple times before I can get it to stay running. When I do get it started, it will run fine. Also, the car is using more gas than I think it should be. Everyone is telling me it is the fuel pump but i've also heard that the evaporation canister could be leaking. What do you guys think?

I think that you need to find the source of the leak before doing anything more on the car. Leaking gas under the hood + a hot motor = charred remains of melted fiberglass.

It could be leaking from the fuel pump, the rubber fuel line from the pump to the hard fuel line on the frame, or from the hard fuel line itself. Don't screw around trying to guess where the leak is, get in there and find it before the car goes up in flames.

It could be the fuel pump diaphram, or a leaking line, either way it's something you need to check out to make sure you don't start a fire.

The car would only leak a drop or two of gas for most of the summer and my mechanic said it was fine so I didn't get too concerned. I put about 120 miles on it last weekend, parked it on sunday night and it has been sitting. My dad told me he went into the garage and really smelled gas and the car had leaked a puddle of gas the size of his foot. I can't really tell you anything except what he told me as the car is stored in my relatives garage and I haven't been there since I parked it on sunday. I'm not driving it till it goes to the mechanic 2 weeks from today. Hopefully I can go over tonight and find out whats leaking and where.

Unless you are going to just call AAA to have it towed to your mechanic (best bet), make sure to find out where the leak is and make sure it can't get near the exhaust before you try to take it anywhere.

Your car is acting like it has a bad fuel pump. They are cheap and easy to replace. You should feel around the bottom of the pump after the engine has been running for a few seconds and see if it is wet. Your car will probably burn to the ground if it catches on fire so consider having this looked at right away.

Mine did the eaxct same thing..I had a helper start the engine COLD while I looked under the hood with a droplight. My fuel pump was OEM and the weep hole was peeing out gas. Remove r\f wheel to access the two hold down bolts(using a lonnng ratchet extension) and a half inch socket. No more gas leak.

it's either the pump or the line, get it up in the air and have it running to look at it good from underneath. if the weep hole in the pump iis leaking, it's shot. if not ,check the lines by bending and manipulting them slightly to see if you can make a cracked line more apparent. if it's a line it's a quick easy fix.

First of all, it is perfectly NORMAL! to have to give it gas to start when cold. That's how you set the choke!

Second, find the leak before going any further. Do not pass go - STOP! FIND LEAK!!

I know that you need to give it gas when starting but since it started leaking gas it has taken a lot more gas to get it started.
The car is sitting till it goes to the mechainc in two weeks. I did try and look at it while I was at my aunts today but all I could see was gas under the car and it looked like a rubber line that went into the fuel pump was wet. Didn't get to see anymore as I was in a rush. It may be a line but I think the pump is shot too.
