Have a 74 small block vert. I know I need new shocks. I am mainly interested in a comfortable ride as performance takes a back seat. Knowing this, would I be ok with going with an AC Delco or something other than the expensive Bilsteins? Keep in mind my priority is to have a comfortable smooth ride. Don't care about taking corners at 35 mph.
Seriously though, the KYB's are not bad, I had them for a while and have other friends with them and they seem to perform well for an inexpensive shock. I ended up going the Bilstein route when I stiffened everything up, but for a daily driver/cruising car, KYB's were great..
I went through this about a year back. I was torn between the performance of the bilsteins and the price of the KYB's. I eventually opted for the bilsteins, however the KYB's are a nice shock.
My buddy has a 65 mustang with KYB's and the ride is very smooth yet still handles the twisties nicely.
So I guess what I am trying to say is if money is a factor, go with the KYB's and if you want awesome performance at any price go with the bilsteins.
Mid America Vette sells the RCSI shocks, they ride GREAT and can be adjusted for handling when you need it. They are a PITA to install in the front but ride and perform well and at $199 a set one of the best deals out there.
Get Monroe shocks from Sears. You need something tuned for boulevard cruising, not auto-x. Save the money you'd spend on adjustables. I'm betting you'd never use them.
I have the Bilsteins and they are worth the money, it is by far not a harsh ride, even with my 550lbs coil springs. You can find them for $250/set.
Before I installed the Bilsteins I had the KYB "gas-a-just" shocks, these are ok for a soft and comfy ride. These should work great if you use the original springs. These are $120 - $150 for all four.
