Thanks for all the input. I decided to just leave well enough alone. I am however vacuming out each cyllinder just in case. It appears that fibers of my red shop rags manage to find themselves in every spot of the engine.

If you have liquid seeping past your rings you have bigger problems than just the carbon. A little bit of mineral spirits in the oil doesn't hurt, after cleaning just lightly oil the walls and it will be fine. If your rings don't hold fluid they certainly won't hold pressure properly.
