Default Finally, 15K miles later

My stroker is just kicking butt! This year, Christmas Eve will be the third anniversary on the motor from first startup. I had oil consumption problems when I drove it HARD! and now that seems to have gone away. I suspect that having dual Spals, and dropping the temp range 25* or so helped that. At the same time, Gas mileage went up from 9-10MPG to at least 12

I replaced the OEM HEI dist with a Mallory Billet, last summer, cleaning up the ignition system after dyno tuning showed random misfires at high RPM.

Interesting note: I' had become to be used to the noise of the forged pistons on cold startup, banging around with Diesel-like sounds for the first mile or so when cold (especially if not driven for a week or so).

Now, 15K miles later, even that noise has calmed down and I have to listen for it to be aware of it any more. I'm terrifically pleased with the motor these days and it's become more and more of a joy to drive.

Don't know why this motor was so much different than others I've put together but the bottom line is, I LOVE IT!

Now just two issues left: Fuel smell and the Qjet's flat spot on takeoff that doesnt' wanna go away.

Congrats on working things out. Those 33 extra cubes with forged parts give it BB class for alot less cash. A stroker would be fun to build and install - some day.
Its only fun when things go right. But we all make a few left turns too.

Did u try a new charcoal EVC with a non-vented gas cap? Check that vapor separator vlv working and the line clear all the way to the correct ported vac port? cardo0

I did pull the tank down and the smell is not from that area. Hoses were good and there was no vapor seperator on the tank to be bad. I did not yet pull the evap cannister, but I have, over and over again, felt around that area for moisture and/or bad hoses. Everything down in that fender looks and feels like new, except for my hand when it's in there!

Well if the separator is missing then that tube a the top of the tank is either plugged or spilling gas. I assume its plugged then the cap has to be vented or as temp increases the vapor pressure inside the tank will increase and the cap will relieve pressure somewhere below 5psi (non-vented caps have some kind of press relief). And if there is just a rubber hose connected to the charcoal EVC line (without liq sep) then u are putting raw fuel into the ECV. I have proved this for myself as i use a recirc line from my carb back to the tank. And when i filled the tank i topped it off covering the liquid separator connection. With 6-9psi recirc press and a nonvented tank, fuel forced its way past my separator and yep, filled up the ECV. Man what a surprize to see raw fuel bubbling out there.
What i'm saying Paul is that if u don't have a separator u need to evaluate what u really have in that system. Vented or unvented cap? No liquid separator - is the EVC connected to the tank and correctly connected to the carb? A EVC without a connection to the tank and a liquid separator in between will then only take vapor from the carb fuel bowl. The fuel tank needs to vent somewhere - thats what the '73 & later EVC systems where designed for.
Well i hope this helps and good luck. Sorry i know nothing 'bout flat spots. cardo0
