Guys I got this gal at work whose looking for a crate 350 or 383 backed with a TH400 or 350 for a mid 80's Chevy pickup. I plan on giving her this thread as a point of refrence. Please if you have links, such as AR crate motors etc. please leave on this thread. She is looking for both the motor and tranny. As always your assistance is appreciated.
I am really pleased with my GMPP 350/290.
I have put almost 1700 miles on it since the 3rd and I have absolutely no complaints other than it's not a 502.
My 78 has never run so well.
I just looked and they have come down another $50 since I bought mine: 350 Crate Engine 290 HP HO
Item #12499529
290 Horsepower:
This is the best value crate engine from GM Performance Parts
IN STOCK NOW!!!
MSRP: $2,173.43 Your Price: $1,599.00
Again budget is the determining factor and horsepower costs money.
I bought mine from these guys. Good to deal with, delivered to my garage. This 440HP is a monster..Quality workmanship, <what I can tell on the outside>.. At least talk to them.. http://stores.ebay.com/Tuff-Dawg-Eng...Q3amesstQQtZkm

Go to any large GM dealership and they will either have the engine in stock or can order it for you. I got my ZZ4 from a dealer in Austin, Tx. I was going to just order the ZZ4 but the parts guy checked his computer while I was in there and they had 1 in stock. Took it home that night. They also carry crate transmissions.
I bought a GMPP ZZ4. If I had it to do over, I would be a lot more serious about getting an Edelbrock crate engine. They are more expensive, but I think you get a quality engine. Also they run them on the dyno, so the horsepower they advertise is the horsepower you get. Also, I'm pretty sure that they use only the best of everything in the engine, so you should be able to expect reliability and durability.
Personally, I would find a local machine shop that was trustworthy, tell them what I wanted to do with it and let them build me something. It sure is nice to have someone local to go back to if something goes wrong.
I'm w/Dude. I had one shop do a turn key job. I'm tired of hearing
"It was the other guy". He had to stand good for the whole job. One of the smarter moves I've made.

According to the sales literature the Edelbrock engines are based on a GMPP ZZ4 short block. Not sure how the cost compares if you bolt on a set of Edelbrock heads yourself.
