Default Pre made plug wires for SBC

I was told that Moroso made them? Called Summit and the guy had no clue what I was talking about.

Last summer I got a Taylor set and couldn't get the boots on the ends. Eric (Fauxrs) came over for the Lars Fest and he go the ends on, but the wires didn't last long. One connector failed and another plug burnt thru even though I had 'em insulated ....

Who makes header quality wires that are pre-cut and assembled for the Smallblock other than the generic crap that NAPA sells?

There's an ebayer "chimptoast" who has great buy it now deals on Accel "Spiral Core Custom Fit 8mm Super Stock". Accel P/N 5042 (non-hei) $20 & 5050 (hei) $23 ... Both sets specific for 350 vette. That's less than half what local parts house gets for same P/N. No, I'm not a schill for the seller ... but I'm a satisfied customer ... I got both sets shipped as one total under $51. No, these aren't THE best header wires ... but they're pretty darned good.

I just bought some 8.5mm MSD wires. The spark plug end is pre made, but you need to to crimp the ends onto the distributor side.

The kit includes wires that are long enough for any imagineable situation, a set of male AND female boots and clips, and the kit also includes a very nice crimper, that serves two purposes- 1) it has aguide to help you properly strip the wire with a razor blade, and 2) it crimps the clip onto the wire. It is a little block that you put into a vice. It works quite well.

The kit also includes instructions! Most kits assume you know waht to so.

One thing the instructions didn't say is how to get the wire with the clip into the boot. I found a very easy way to do it.
1 use lots of KY...just kidding, use spark plug grease
2 stick a small screw driver into the metal cup to push it into the boot, all the KY in the world isn't gonna help you get the limp wire into the boot. A small screw driver works great, and then slide right out.

That process is very time consuming, but well worth it because you truly have a custom kit that fits. Plus you can route the wire however you want.

I also like the fact that they are availible in Black.

I also bought MSD wires and cut them to length. It was extremely easy with the use of their Pro-Crimp tool:

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...57&prmenbr=361

It costs $50 for the tool, but it made the process sooooo easy, and you can buy various die's to put into the crimper. Universal wire kits work good, but custom cut sets look even better.

I have had several sets of pre-made Blue Max wires (from Summit) and been very happy with them. I would try them again. The catalog I have at work is from '03, but on p87 it says "Blue Max Wires Please specify make, model, engine. Custom fit, set."

Thanks everyone! I definitely won't buy the Taylors again - all but impossible to assemble and one of 'em burned right away with first exposure to heat.

I've got Belden Cheapos on there now and even those things don't burn like Taylors did.

I bought these as well. They work perfectly with my stock, '81 tube shorty headers. As above, no affiliation with the vendor; just a satisfied customer.

How about Delco 508N sets designed for Corvette? OEM quality in fit, finish, and look. They fit under all the required plug wire shields and look like original. They are carried my Advance Auto and others. No pink wires, no blue wires, no purple wires - just good old, orginal looking semi-flat black. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Gary but the OEM wires run under the motor mounts, up thru the no longer existing shields you mentioned. They are very long and won't work without wrapping them around the distributor a few times to take up the extra slack!

Whatever wire set you end up with, I have a couple of tips that you may or may not be aware of. 1. Use dielectric grease at both ends of every wire. When an ignition wire burns on the plug, coil, or dist. cap, it is ALWAYS the result a poor elecrical connection. 2. I have noticed on Third Gen f-bodies in the club I'm in that for some reason the plug wire on #1 always wants to rotate over to touch the header on the #1 cylinder. I put a set of "wire routers" on my engine, and in particular I put a two wire clamp right between #1 & #3 cylinders to keep the wires from rotating over against the headers. Get the good clamps. The cheap plastic things you find at Autozone, Kragen, or Pep Boys will just melt in the heat. The good ones will be made of a tough engineering plastic that is much more heat resistant.

I saw some MSD ones on Summit but they had a coil wire, even though they were supposed to be pre-assembled and for HEI. Didn't make sense to me.
