Default How to mount Spals?

Just received my dual 11" spals and I would like to mount them on a new Modine 4 row Brass radiator. However I havent found a set of brackets that would work with this radiator. Any direction or suggestions? Your help is appreciated. Also, I do not want the zips going through my radiator well not unless its the only way?

thanks!

Modine Radiator:

I just did this with a brass radiator. Hang it from the top, using the old upper brackets from the OEM shroud.

On the bottom, I had two brackets with studs on them sticking out of the radiator support. Once I had the radiator hung on top, I simply cut a piece of aluminum flatware the width between the brackets. I slid it behind those studded brackets (there's a half inch free space behind them, with no shroud on them) and after it was there, I bolted it to the bottom of the radiator. Worked perfectly.

Another alternative is to call Tom Dewitt. He provides a set of brackets that I used to mount the spals to an aluminum Griffin universal radiator. Don't know if they will work on a brass radiator but worth a call. They attach top and bottom, not through the rad. Good luck- the fans are nice BTW

I used his brackets on my stock 1980 radiator and the fit like a glove!!

Give Tom a call and order the bracket kit, it's not that expensive and solves all your mounting problems.

Make sure to install the fans to the passenger side and not dead center on the radiator. If you put them centered they will run into the driver's side a-arm bushing.

Whatever you do, dont poke anything thru the rad. It'll only rub thru and cause a leak.

Just mounted mine a couple weeks ago. Here's a couple pics of the finished results.

What you can't see are the bottom mounts. The two sides were just flat plates between the corner fan mounts and the old radiator shroud lower mounts. The lower center is a similar bracket to the top center one shown. It just "wraps around" to the lower radiator support.

Brackets were made from 1" wide x 1/8" thick steel bar stock and are quite stiff/stable. This bar stock is available at Home Depot for about $4-5 for a 3 foot piece. Bends were made w/a bench vise and a hammer and a bit of trial and error fitting. Took a couple hours to fabricate all 6 mounts. I also added some foam weather stripping along the vertical ridges on the front of the fan assembly to protect the radiator from any vibration of the fans that may occur.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

That looks killer! Appears to be plenty strong with 6 brackets. Why didnt I think about doing that? I totally forgot about Home Depot being one of the better Auto Supply Stores in my city. Is that where you got the foam as well?

Thanks, I appreciate the help!

Trust me -- the DeWitt's brackets are easier than going to the store and making those brackets. Dirt simple, everything included and worth saving the time and effort of making your own.

Unless of course you actually enjoy the challenge of doing it yourself.

Anyone can spend $$$ buying what you need. Only some can actually "do it themselves".

Very true. But my time is valuable and the brackets only cost me like $30 bucks or so. I would have spent more money just in time alone to make something like that. Besides, yours wouldn't work with my stock air intake.

Just giving options for everyones budget (time and money wise)

That looks like a very clean install. Howd the 78-82 crowd end up with the wider radiators which may or may not cool any better than the earlier c3's with a smaller radiator and big blocks?
