anyone ever tried shaving a little off the bottom of the cylinder heads to bump up the compression, i'm talkin 1974 L48 8.5:1 ratio. until i can afford to buy some descent heads i was wondering if compression increase by this means along with new carb, intake, cam kit, and exhaust would be worth my while. if so how much would i have to take off to bump it up to around 9 or 9.5 to 1.
I suppose they could take off enough to get you to 9/1. That is, if it hasn't already been done. If you were to have the head shaved while getting a three angle valve job (if the heads are original they could probably use this anyway) and do some street port work these could be worth 30 HP by themselves. Headers and a good exhaust will only make this better. Add a mild performance cam and tune it razer sharp and you may be rethinking replacing that carburetor and manifold.
By the time you take it apart and look at what is there, find out that the head should be redone etc.
You would be better off buying new heads, ready to go out of the box and be done with it. Steel heads are cheap these days,if your going to change cam and etc, doesn't cost anymore to buy the proper componets
to get max HP and TQ.
Then you have something and no money wasted!
Just my .02 cents worth
I've been down this path and have learned to get what you want cost less in the long run.
