Default Electric Problem

I just put a Big Block in my 75 vette. Everything went well up to hanging all of the electric. The wire that goes from the Battery side of the starter to the alternator keeps frying. I cut open the wiring harness, and found nothing as far as dead shorts on that wire. The alternator is grounded to the motor and that seems to be the problem. This is the second Alternator that I have on this car. All of my lights work, turn signals, horns even the key buzzer works. My gauges don't. I hope someone can give a hand on this problem.

Any chance you have the battery hooked up backwards? The alternator will look like a dead short if you do.
