The starter has crapped out on my '69 ZZ4/M21. Any recommendations on what type I should replace it with? It has a high torque starter on it now and I will get another, but I'm not sure if there is any brand in particular I should look into.
Local Speed recommends, but that's obvious since they sell them. I have just installed a Powermaster alternator and working well so far. http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/
Jeg's and Summit carry them.
I have a Mean Green starter which are used by off-roaders a lot, they are pricey though, $299, which is about $70 more than the Powermaster. If mine goes I will replace with the Powermaster.
I had surprisingly good luck with a chain store lightweight
one. I now have two of them. They are a reduced size thing I got from AutoZone for the low $100's that are rated at higher torque than their standard "high torque" GM starters. The neatest thing is they are so light - and smaller in size - than the regular starters, maybe nearing half the weight. They aren't a gear reduction starter - or at least they don't have the whine and lack the gear reduction head on those I've seen and almost used a few times, but they are about the size of one in the main body part.
They might be a Powermaster brand, but I'm not sure.
