Default lowering the suspension!

i know this question has problably been asked already, but here it goes again.

has anybody lowered there vette?

i have a 1980 t-top
355# trw style rear monospring
new coil springs in front
koni adjustable shocks (set hard)
adjustable poly strut arms

anyway, i put some long, and i mean long bolts in the rear & got it as low as i would like. but know i have concern about bottoming out on the rubber bumbstop. it has about 2" clearance.

has anybody run into this problem yet?

also, to lower the front i was told to cut the spring.
has anybody done this?
how much does cutting off one coil lower it.
i was thinking of cutting off 1.5 coils?

any help would be great!

This hasn't come up in a couple weeks. Do a search under tech, there's a ton of opinions there. Form your own.

Remember:

1. cut from the bottom

2. make sure the top of the spring is seated in the UPPER pocket. Bottom alignment doesn't matter.

3. don't torque the control arm bolts until there's weight on the front end.

4. post your questions here.

Happy knuckle busting.

You will need to have the car realigned after any lowering. Toe changes as does camber.

unless you have progressive springs it does not matter which end you cut. and bevel and smooth the end you cut. have you thought of how your gonna cut it? do not use heat. only use a cut off wheel or sawzall. as for lining up on the top or bottom, both top and bottom have pockets which the end of the spring will set in. as to which is the correct one im not sure. but i am positive that a lower a- arm moves and the frame does not. therefore i always line up on the bottom so it will not move as the a-arm goes up and down. i have done this on many makes and models, even imports, and have never had a problem. ( yes i know imports dont have a-arms, but they also have pockets in ther strut, for spring alignment ). as for how much to cut, start with 1 to 1.5 coil, and go from there. it depends on the type of spring, and you preference. on my c-3, i have the 550 lb. springs and cut them to align with both pockets as it did not align when new and i planned on lowering it anyhow. this lowered about an 1 3/4".

Hey Zaphod, Have you seen Ford Prefect lately?

The TRW springs are know to ride way too high, Not much you can do about it. Most people have switched them out for steel or VBP glass springs...

Make sure your bolts don't hang below the rim, otherwise a flat tire is a dangerous event, besides being ileagal in most states.
