I have a stock ZZ4 backed up by a TKO 500. I am looking to increase the power for a winter project. Should I go for the GM Hot Cam (good for 395 HP in the ZZ4) or should I pull the stock L98 vette heads and have them pocket ported (Sallee chevrolet says good for 385 HP). Anyone have a better idea?
HOT cam. Plus, upgrade the ignition system to MSD-type. Between the two, you'll be past the 400 HP benchmark, for less cost than just the heads alone...
I'd shy away from NO2 (what wannabe' racers in lowered roller-skates with fart-pipes hanging off the back call NOSS (from NOS, "nitrous oxide systems") or Nawz...).
It IS cheap... But it lasts no time, before the bottle is empty.
As well, the fuel system must have no weaknesses- a second or two of lean-out, and your hypereutectic pistons will be history. Forged pistons are a little forgiving, but not the hypereutectic pistons.
I pocket ported my ZZ4 heads, installed Manley raceflow valves, and got the GM "Hot Cam" with 1.6 rockers .... runs strong. Home porting the heads and installing better valves is an inexpensive alternative to professional porting .... obviously with less HP too.
