Default Half-Shaft Question

Just purchased a new set of 3 inch Half-Shafts. One is 1/8" to 3/16" shorter than the original shafts. The other is exactly the same length as the original 2.5" shafts which is 15 5/16" tip to tip not including the flange.

I am concerned that the shorter shaft is an issue since these are an integral part of the IRS. I have asked the supplier for a replacement but am waiting to hear back from them

What's your thoughts ?

To avoid toe and camber problems (minor), I would get the correct length. Peace of mind, nothing more.

I think your measuring wrong. You need to measure fom the center cap of the u-joint to the center of the other cap. Half shaft yokes can be thicker on the ends. They vary quite a bit. You should be at 13 7/8"(I believe, I'll have to double check tomorrow at work) from center to center on the caps.

It sounds like you got a shaft for 80-82.

This is a good point - the distance between the holes is what is important. Since it is hard to measure from center to center of the holes, you can pick an edge and measure to the same edge of the other hole (as long as the holes are the same size, of course).

Default I measured tip to tip and a couple of other ways

also and all came up 1/8 to 3/16 short. Measured from cap edge to cap edge. Stood the original shaft up beside new shaft and could see new one was shorter. when comparing the 2 new shafts I can see the tube was cut shorter on one.

Supplier is shipping me a new one.

Thanks for all your input.

Mike

80-82 shafts are shorter in length than the 63-79 shafts. 80-82 shafts are 13 1/2" center to center.

This got me to thinking - that was a good thing you did to measure them before installing. I might not have noticed only 1/8 inch and installed them anyway!!
