Since I bought my 77 about a month ago, it has been one problem after another. Now it seems that the interior guage lights do not light. Since I only drove the car in the daylight when I first got it, I didn't notice it until this week. One strange thing.... when I rotate the light switch counter clockwize instead of the dome light going on, the right turn signal light lights (constant). This turn signal light works properly as a turn signal too.
I replaced all the bulbs and was careful to put them into the correct holes in the gauges.
Bad ground. Easily tested too. Simply grab a wire, ground it to the battery, and touch it to something metal on the cluster and see if the lights work.
Thanks for the help. I dread trying to remove the the driver's side dash. Is there an easier way to get to a ground wire. Say through the center gauges?
The wipers don't work either. So I was checking the current to the connector that feeds the wiper motor. I found 12V constantly to one of the wires (#1 I think). I didn't have much time last night and couldn't make sense of it so I just re-inserted the wiper motor connectors. And now a new problem has come up. This morning I get in the car, turn the key. I hear the ignition catch for a second and now the entire car is dead. No lights, no nothing. I pretty sure this is a short or open (ground??).
Please help again. I never feel more helpless than when a car is totally dead.
