I know I know... i SHOULD know this, but I'm just curious. I read on here that HEI basically incorporates the coil and the dist... so if it's not HEI, does that mean the coil is totally separate from the dist.? On my L-48, if I take off the metal dist. cover, it appears to have the coil mounted right on it. Does this mean that I have HEI? I'd take a picture, but I really don't feel like pulling that cover off cause the holes never seem to line up right to put it back on.
anyways, I was looking at Lars' tuning info and it had different instructions for HEI systems, so it made me think. hopefully it's a simple yes or no answer, but that's never the case, so any info would be great. thanks!
Well, it would have helped to know what year the Vette in question is and if the dist is stock GM. If the coil is mounted in the distributor cover, between the 8 terminals that the plug wires connect to then yes you do have HEI. However if your dist is not stock then who knows, as various manufacturers put their HEI coils in different places. 1975 was the first year for HEI.
like my sig says; it's a 77... my uncle has had the car since 77 (I just bought it recently), but I don't think he did much to it other than a cheap paint job and a small exhaust system lol
so it's most likely stock... and yea it's in/on the dist cap inbetween all the wires
my 77 is a stock HEI...look at the size of the dist cap (provided it's an unmolested engine. if the cap seems kinda small and dinky, its not HEI. If the cap is about as big around as a 1 pound coffee can, it's HEI.
In reference to stupid questions, its time to buy a repair manual. They are worth the 30 bucks, over and over. BTW, have fun with your new 'project'.. ..enjoy!
Mike
It's HEI...you're describing the one on my 76 exactly..
OH, and no question is stupid...that's how you become an expert...everybody started out inexperienced...have fun
Didn't Vettes all go to HEI in '75? '74 was the last year for the distributor points setup.
That's right. My brother's 75 is HEI. First year of catalytic converters. All done to improve the emissions. thevetterisbetter has a 74, and he had points when i was at TFB in Chicago.
