Default Heater control problems

Hi folks,

I was hoping to tap into the wealth of experience on these boards.

1979 Corvette....here's the problem:

The heater and air controls in the dash do not work. THe fan blows at the selected levels, but it will only blow through the floor vents and I can't get it to change to defrost, vent, etc. No matter what is selected, it blows out of the floor.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help!

There is a vacuum distribution valve on the control under the console. Most of the time the plastic rivet has broken on it causing the symptoms you describe. You can replace the rivet with a pop rivet or a nylon screw of the proper size. This restores the pressure on the valve halfs and it will work again. Be careful not to get it too tight though.

My 79 did the same and replaced valve, still did not work. I gave up and justed droped my car off at DM Corvette in Downers Grove, IL.
My worst fear is that mice got into the car and had a wirefest!

I did as Wombvette suggested, and that was the situation in my case. Made the repair and controls work fine. Many thanks!
As mentioned in other posts, the blower fan output is really pitiful.
Another question......does the fan run all the time? I thought the lowest setting would be "off", but the fan still runs. I mean, the fan increases with each switch position, just doesn't shut off on lowest.
Thanks again. One more little problem solved!

If you want to upgrade your blower motor, visit any Grainger store and order a new Dayton motor for it. We just did this to replace the original blower motor in our Jaguar, and it was $18. Had to do some slight mods to the motor shaft to get the fan cage to slide on, but other than that, it bolted right up with a more powerful fan motor, made specifically for heater motor applications.

When I get my C3 on Sunday, I'll try to locate the blower motor and see if I can find a direct replacement for the blower motor on it that will bolt right in, since the Dayton motors are a little bit bigger in diameter.

Yup That is GM's way of clearing the drivers compartment of noxious fumes! Yeah! so yes it is normal. Don't quote me but I think the removal of the brown wire at the heater box connections quits the fan in the lowest position.

I think I heard that some people are using C4 blower motors? They are supposed to blow more air than the C3's.

Default fan running

If you turn control to off the fan will stop, mine does and it's a 79. As
far as C4 blower motors. It ain't the motor thats changed but the squirrel cage fan. A shim has to be made because of length. There have
been posts over the years regarding this upgrade. Steve
