Default 69 427 Engine Removal

How hard is it to pull the 427 engine in a 69 with the transmission attached? I'm using a cherry picker with an adjustable tilt. It looks awful close between the oil pan and the power steering cylinder and I have to get everythig front far enough to clear the transmission cross member. I'm sure someone has tried to do this before. Is it possible or do I have to remove the trans first?

Just pull the tranny if it's a 4 speed. My wife and I pulled the 454 in my '71 and it was a piece of cake. She worked the lift while I made sure everything cleared underneath the car and in the engine bay.

I have alway disconnected the bellhousing before pulling the 427 in my '68. I have heard you can do it with the transmission attached but you must remove the radiator support (not sure if this is required, but that is what I heard once from a Corvette mechanic). I guess if you got the car high enough you could tilt it at such an angle to allow the tailshaft to clear the floor.

I pulled the engine without the tranny and I can't explain what a PITA that was. Trying to get to the top bolts on the bellhousing was next to impossible. It took probably an hour to get the last bolt out.

I put the engine back in with the tranny attached, and it was a piece of cake. I did have the radiator out at the time.

Since you are going to have to drain the radiator anyway, I would suggest pulling the radiator and then removing the engine and trans together.

Good luck.

I already have the radiator and radiator support out, and I was looking at those top bellhousing bolts, they looked like a bear to get at. I think i'm going to try it all together. If it don't work then i'll drop the trans.

The only way to go is to it all together. The first time I did the engine first and then the trans...Nightmare.

You just have to jack the back of the car up some to swing the trans tail around.

I did it with a non counterweigthed cherry picker and it was tippy but I did it alone.
The adjustable eye gadget is really worth the fabbing or buying. It allows tilting the engine without sitting it down and re-rigging the chain. Good for out and in. Its the threaded rod and post deal. Moves the lifting point forward or back.

When taking it out I did have to grab hold of the tail and lift it up swing it around. My problem was being alone had to push the car, pull the cherry picker myself to clear the car.

As the others have said, having one or two buddies around will definitely help. I put mine in with an a-frame and hoist. I had one person lowering the hoist, one pushing the car, and one checking for interference. It's beer well spent.

Well the engine is out. I had a couple of buddies over, we easily removed the trans then the bellhousing first and the engine lifted right out. We were drinking beer in no time.
