I found a pair of flowmaster 40 series mufflers in my area for $65 which i know is a good price, but should I get them? They're a year old and they are offset on one side and center on the other. Would this require anything special since I believe the stock mufflers are offset and offset? All I would need to do to switch these out is to jack up the car, cut off the old mufflers and tack weld in the new ones right....
How loud are these things? Can I use my arc welder at low amperage? Thanks you guys I know that I have a lot of questions.
Don't know about volume, but you should be OK with center and offset on them if the flow direction allows the centered hole to face rearward. Just do a little measuring before you buy...
I have flowmasters on my 1970 and they sound great, has a nice deep throat sound to them, like a muscle car should have. as far as the space issue, you will just have to see for yourself if you can put slow bend or something to make the pipes fit.
i have aftermarket tips already and everything, so as long as the pipes will go out the back i should be good right? anyone know how i can weld this thing in? i have an arc welder.....
What do you mean by arc welder? Basically anything using electricity is arc welding hence the term "arc".
SMAW-shielded metal arc welding or "stick"-this uses a welding rod
GMAW-gas metal arc welding or "mig" this uses a roll of wire
GTAW-gas tungsten arc welding this is commonly refered to as heli-arc or tig
The above is simplified but you get the picture.
I would assume you have a welding machine for stick welding since this is the most common. The exhaust pipe/mufflers can be welded with this machine but the question is if you can weld them using this machine. Get a couple of scrap pieces of exhaust and see if you can weld them together. Also I would be very mindful of the fuel tank and an electrode (welding rod) if you are planning on doing this on the car.
hmmm. Some hate these mufflers and other love them. I took them off after only 3 days....could not stand the interior resonance which can be very bad on a glass car with a very small tail pipe. I hear that the delta 40's are better but not sure. I also do not think this price for used mufflers is very good. Check new prices...not much different from your local speed shop. These are not expensive muffers to buy new.
I have 40s on my car. I've had them for about 4 years now and I love them. Yes, you will definately get some resonance inside of the car. I don't listen to the stereo too much when I drive, I usually like listening to the sound of the engine so I don't really care about the noise.
Also, you get a nice little vibration in the seat that tingles certain parts through the seat right around 1500 RPM (don't ask about that)...

Feels goooood!!! If I remember correctly, Vette mufflers have offset in and offset out. You'll need to fabricate pipe for them to fit.

I assumed these were new, if not don't even fool with them. I bought 50 series deltas for mine from Summit for about $112.00 for a pair and that included the handling charge as well. Just keep an eye out for one of their clearance or specials.
I did read your post again and see you said they were a year old, I wouldn't fool with them, buy new ones that fit and be done with it.

I've had VERY bad experiance with local muffler shops - they don't install parts that you bought elsewhere
That said, you will not be able to weld the mufflers in place using a stick welder under the car, laying on your back getting the splatter all over you....
If you buy the mufflers at a local muffler shop you should pay less than $200 for two Flowmaster 40s incl installation. They should be able to re-use your old muffler hangers and weld them to the new mufflers
