electric choke
I found the electric choke in the glove compartment ,Just bought a 81 with a edelbrock carb.. When i installed the choke and connected the wires the choke closed when the power is on .. (Working backwards) any ideas, I thinking of reversing the choke spring

Sounds like you have the thermostatic spring on the wrong side of the activator tang (how's that for a techie answer)
Pull the elect choke back off, and make sure that it's on the right side of that thing that it moves.
If it's working properly, you'll see it unload the choke after about two minutes of operation.

a lot of the electric chokes use springs that are heat sensitive and when the spring is cold from not having any power to it it closes, when you turn the power on the spring starts to heat up (irrespective of the engine running) and slowly starts to open...sounds like this one is just misadjusted.

It takes awhile for the thing to heat up. It should just be closed though, and don't forget to set the choke by pushing the gas pedal down.
modern people have no idea how a choke works and sometimes don't activate it. Don't know if your a pre carb or not person.
