Have any of you guys out there installed the gm zz 383/425 stroker? Im getting ready to drop one in my 79 and I dont know if I'll have hood clearance problems. Any gouge appreciated, make me proud!
They recommend this manifold "GM dual plane intake P/N 12366573 may be used for hood clearance on the ZZ383/425" but claim that it will cost you 15-20hp.
But keep in mind most manifolds that are too tall will still fit with a drop base air cleaner and an element that is either only 2 or 3 inches tall.

thanks for the reply, I put on the single plane intake manifold, simply because the lower dual plane losses power, about 25 horses, just couldn't do it. The engine looks sweet though, the block is red with a march pully kit, chrome valve covers + timing chane cover, chrome accessories and MSD dist. If a 2" air cleaner work Ill wait till I drop the motor and try that. I also saw a holley air cleaner that has two filters that sit above the valve covers with some kind of manifold in between. Looks interesting.
Do you have power steering? Might want to check pulley clearance at the crossmember with that march system. I have to use short water pump on mine and ps only clears by about 3/4 inch max. with v belts.
Yeah my PS pulley is about 1/16 of an inch from the cross member, I don't remember it being like that with the old motor but I'm using the same pulleys.

I have a 383 in a 82 with air gap and a holley. I tried the holley air cleaner you mentioned.....not even close. I used a drop down with K&N around and on top. A single plane might give you a few more headaches, tho. Larry
i have a 383 with a air gap and a demon carb. i use a drop base air cleaner with a 3" filter. no mods or hood changes for my 78'. and unless your cranking 4500-5000+ rpm all the time, that single plane is COSTING you 25 horse. common knowlege that dual plane manifolds deliver MORE power than a single plane at almost ALL rpms, losing out at only the higher rpm's.
I just put a 1/2"spacer under my Vic Jr / 3310 carb and with the 14" dropbase air filter, the hood still closes.Only 3/8" clearance when I checked it with my kids silly putty.Thats on my 80 with the 406.

My stock hood worked, but I had to trim some meat from under the hood that fits around the 82 air cleaner. The drop down is an air cleaner thats drops(usually about 2 In.) around your carb. to give you more hood clearance. I got mine at Auto Zone, but you can get them anywhere. I used a K&N filter 2 or 2 1/2 in. and put a K&N filtered top on it because I figured the 770 might want a little more air. I have Ele. alum. heads on mine. Vortec might have a different height on the carb. if that's what you have.(really don't know much about that) Sometimes a drop down will bother your choke, but I had no trouble. Watch your carb stud height. It can put a nice little hole through your hood. I think you can make it work with a little work. Good luck. Larry
