2004R trans. question

I can pick up a 2004R trans.in good condition(no leaks )for a great price.The owner says it came from possibly a late 70s or early 80s chevy.He said he didn't think it was an OD trans.I'm not familiar with these trannys,does this sound correct?I was under the impression that they where all built with OD.Can someone help with the details of this trans.I don't want to buy if it's not an OD.Thanks much!

Does not sound correct at all. I do not think they made them in those years...and 200r4's have the fourth overdrive gear. Perhaps take some pics so we can help you more.

The first use of an overdrive automatic in a Chevy was in the 1982 Corvette. That was a 700 transmission. The 200 4R was introduced in the late '80's.

I'll have to stand corrected. I have found a source that lists the 200 4R as early as 1981. THIS link should give you a lot of help in identifying transmissions.

Thanks 1979toy,that link is great.I looked on ebay,and 1 picture looked like a long shaft.Is the one that I need for my 75 a long shaft,or short?Starting to narrow things down abit.Thanks guys.
