Thought I would tap the knowlege from this forum before I started crawling under cars, so here is the question. I have a 1980 vette 350 4 spd car that the rear end is toast in and a freind that has a rear end complete out of a 1981 350 vette that was an automatic car will the gear ratio be different or the same.
Could be the same and could be different. Other than what the factory installed it's very possible gears could have been changed. Quickest way to see if they are close is to jack up the car turn the tire one complete revoulution and count how many full turns and partial turns the drive shaft makes. Do this to both cars or the rear ends. The for sure way is to pull the cover and cout the teeth on the pinion and ring gears.
Ratios are probably different between the 4 spd and the automatic. '81s also used fiberglass springs. If you go with the 81 rear, might as well take the spring, too.

Hi, if you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see the various years and from that you may be able to find out what rear end ratio the cars came with originally. It takes a bit of looking but the information is there, hope this helps, maybe the rears were not changed and are as original. Other then that,, Good luck! Peace,,,, Craig
The ratio is the same for both years which is 3:07 to 1 for gas economy reasons. In 1980 the 4speed and automatic rears looked different but they had the same ratio. In 1981 the automatic came with the fiberglass spring which only weighed eight pounds compared to the forty-four pound steel spring.
