Got an 82 vette with A/C problems, just changed the system over to Freeze 12. Flushed the system, changed the drier, put in a new oriface, put in a new condenser fan and here is what is happening.
The A/C runs fine when the car is cold, when the engine warms up so does the air coming from the vents, the air gets to about 78 degrees, but if I disconnect the heater hoses the air coming from the vents will stay at 32 degrees.
Everything seems ok, but there is something that I am overlooking, can anyone point me in the right direction.

Thanks Greatly,
I'm not an air guy, but there's water valve (forget what it's called) to shut off the water to your heater while the air is on. Sounds like yours is not working. When the motor warms up and the therm. opens hot water is sent to the valve... the valve is suppose to stop it. I've been told that it's best to unhook the hoses, anyway, to get the most out of these old systems. I'm sure, in a few minutes, someone with a lot more knowledge will help you out. Larry ( yea, heater control valve... that's it. ) thanks Big G

I'm gonna get the heat control valve and try it. The next question would be, is there anyway to test this valve. I applied 10 lbs of vacuum to the valve last night and within about 5 minutes I had lost vacuum.
I called a local chevy dealer but as you can guess they were no help at all. I cant find any information on Alldata either about any test procedures for this valve.
Again, I'll let you know what happens if I can find this valve in a parts store and install it.
Thanks

Valve is probably bad. If it moves with vacuum it's at least trying to work. I've never seen a spec on how long it should hold, 5 minutes doesn't seem too bad. I'd still replace it, from the symptoms you describe it isn't working.
You might consider installing a manual ball valve type shut off in the heater hose leading to the heater core. You can purchase a valve that has threaded ends on both sides. Threaded hose barbs are then screwed to the valve. The parts can be purchased at most any plumbing supply or home center. Simply turn the valve off when you are using the A/C.
I have a functioning heater control valve, but found installing the ball valve in line with the heater control valve makes the A/C cooler.
Thanks for all the tips. I called several online vette parts places yesterday, but none of them list this part for the vehicle. I found a place in Philly that had the part and is shipping it out. I should have it in a few days, but of course, it's getting cooler now so I wont really know how it works til next summer.
Mark, thanks for the great advise, I'm gonna go hunt down the ball valves and install them too,
Again, I thank everyone for thier quick response and ideas.
There is also a door on the heater core box that is controlled by the hot/cold slider on your heater/ac control. Is it working? the door is suppose to seal off the core so no hot air gets through when the A/C is on.
