Default What am I missing

Ok so hear is the situation. I have some rear wheel bearing noise so I thought I would pull out the spindle and do a visual inspection, I have taken off the wheel, brake caliper, rotor drum assembly, the half shaft, and the nut and cotter pin of the spindle. I have used a slide hammer axle puller on the spindle and it has not even budged. So the question is am I forrgeting anything or is it just being stubborn.

Thanks in advance Scott

It better be a 5 pound slide hammer. They can be tough. Keep at it.

I used to use a slide hammer, then switched to a "spindle-knocker". Even then, sometimes I have to heat the inner bearing race with a torch to expand it. Of course, the bearing is usless by now.

Bearing could of heat up, spun the race and siezed itself. Try a press and put a socket over the threads so you don't mess them up.

I was wondering if I have to pull the e-brake shoes out of the way to get to anything that may be holding the spindle in place or should it come out and just leave all of that stuff in place?

The E-brakes may make the job harder to get the spindle out if the shoes are not backed off. I don't think they would stop the spindle from at least moving a little before they present a problem

e-brake does not affect spindle removal on a C2/C3 Vette when the rotor is already off.

Due to production machining stackup, or damage as VanSteel indicated, some spindles are tough to get off. I have had difficulty with a 20 ton press at times.

I never re-use rear spindle bearings regardless of how they are removed. Pounding/Pressing puts a lot of stress on the bearings & seats. I also never use the bearings as leverage points when assembling the spindles.... I press them back together using tooling to avoid putting any pressure whatsoever on the bearings & seats.

(Slip Fit excepted)

What is a spindle knocker and how is it used ? where can I get 1 or rent 1 and if I try to press it out I would have to take off the trailing arm as well to get it in a press would I not ?

The spindle knocker treads onto the spindle. It protects the treads from being damaged while being hammered on. There is also a spindle press that can be used while the TA is still on the car. Most of the all purpose vendors carry the items. I doubt these items are rentable at the local rent-it-center. Typically you buy the item, most members are not inclined to rent their personal tools.
