Trany will not go in gear HELP!!!
Thank god for AAA. I was driving my 71 home yesturday and as I was coming up to a light I could not get my car back in any gear and the clutch felt wierd. Can someone tell me if it is the clutch that is bad or does it need adjusting or is it the trany. I was able to shout the engine off and get it in gear, when I started it to ge it out of the middle of the road though the clutch was making noices and was not fully ingaged. Help please!!!!

I was hoping for just an adjustment but i guess not. anyone have step by step on pulling a tranny and clutch out. At least winter is coming and I'll have time to do it.
Thanks

Melting Slicks
Especially if everything was OK before. I'd raise the car up on ramps and crawl under and watch the linkage while someone tries to move the shift lever. Don't have the engine running. Watch the clutch linkage also.

Were you able to put it in gear with the engine shut off?
Does the clutch pedal move ok, or does it feel like it is impinged/stuck.
possibiliites??
shift linkage jammed
clutch fork damaged
clutch disk broken.
I guess if it is winter and you are looking for a good project, then dropping the transmission, removing the bellhousing and replacing the clutch sounds like a good project.
I did mine on a 1969 I had and it wasnt too bad. Considering that was the first time I ever tried to do one.
This is going to be a case of "while I am at it" disease though.
While you are into the car that far you might as well...
pull the flywheel off to resurface it, or replace it.
replace the ujoints on the drive shaft
might as well do all the half shafts too since the car will be up on jacks and you can do all 6 at one time
change the differntial fluid, since you are in the area.
etc.

It will go into gear with the engine off. And yes the pedal does move but it feel like something is broken. I'll try and look at the eazy things before I ripe it apart
Thanks for the input.

when I blew my clutch I never tried starting it in gear, but I would start it in neutral and get my son to push the car and then slip it into 1st gear at about 2 mph.... then did some clutchless shifting by matching engine rpm to ground speed... it was "fun" !! Stop signs and especially stop lights were a bit of a problem tho!

The linkage was good so I pulled it apart. That is a bitch since I could not drop the tranny because of the crossmember. So I pushed the tranny and bell houseing as far back as possible and pulled the clutch. The housing that holds the springs in two of them broke and one of the springs came out. so I bought a new clutch and I'm putting it back in boy did I learn alot from that maybe I can get it finished this week. Thanks for all the input.
I'll let you know how it runs when I get it done

Don't forget this!
One of the those "while I'm there I might as well" things: my '72 is making a deep, metallic rattling noise sometimes when I let he clutch pedal out. I think my throw-out bearing is about to let go. Before you close up I suggest you replace yours and also be sure to check that your clutch fork is in good shape. Good luck.

Since I was there I bought clutch pressure plate bearing and had the flywheel looked at. I hope I do not have to do that again because trying to get up in there was a bitch.

I know, been there-done that! Sometimes I think all I ever do is give, give, give to my '72 without getting anything back....and then I remember about the last time I drove down the street and everyone is waving and smiling, the chicks are raising their skirts a little with that twinkle in their eyes....what are you going to do?
