Advice needed on head studs.
Tonight I pulled the intake. I am cleaning the parts as I go, not for the final time but an initial cleaning. I was going to pull the heads and then thought I should take the time to do a leak down test to determine the condition of the rings.
That comes tomorrow.
When I blueprinted the motor I used bolts, head bolts and main bolts because I put the engine together a few times, took it apart, remachined etc etc.
For the final assembly I used studs on everything even the oil pan. The problem with studs is taking things back apart.
Heads just don't want to slide off over the studs. I would like to pull the heads without disturbing too much since I want a good look at the head gasket. I am convinced I lifted it occasionally over the last few months. The gasket should tell the story.
My problem is How do you lift the heads off with studs??? Do you have to pry them up a little and then struggle with the studs or do you remove the studs one by one before attempting to lift the heads??
