I put my hardtop on yesterday and went for a drive. I noticed a squeeling sound coming from somewhere. I could not pinpoint it but it's not coming from the back of the car. It sound like its coming from the dash area. It only made the sound while I was moving. Anyone had any sounds like this coming from the dash area? I am going to get my cousing to ride with me today and try to pinpoint it. My tranny is on its last legs but I don't think it could be that it because the noise stops when the car stops and there is no sound when the tranny is out of gear and the clutch is not pressed. Could I be hearing a vacuum leak?
Possibly your speedo cable? Doesn't usually make what I'd describe as a squealing noise when going bad, but you never know.

I was thinking about that and the tach cable but I ruled out the tach because it stops when the car stops. I'll change my speedo cable (or lube it) when I pull the tranny soon.
Thanks Rich
fan belt? loose? upside down?
Does it squel at the higher RPM just before changing gears?
Does it come & go w/ acceleration?
You can check this in the hood by "goosing " the carb and see what happens...mine was hitting the bottom of that whatchamacallit hooked onto the alternator adjusting bracket. good luck , jim
With the windows down you should be better able to determine whre it's comin from;
I just found out about a worn out U-joint on the inside of the passenger side inner half-shaft; was thinkin it was the rear end.
Thanks for the sugestions guys
I know its not the belts or the u-joints. All my u-joints are brand new. The only thing I've done since the noise started was to install the foam seal between the bell housing and the trans tunnel. I am removing the trans this winter for rebuild (on its last legs) so the noise may be coming from it or something related.
