Here in NC , for 1981 vehicles, the only emission related requirement to pass inspection, IS: the original emission equipment has to be installed, e.g...smog pump, AIR, computer, etc..AND "Appear" to be functional..(.this appear is a nice loophole.)
I can't find a needed PROM for a manual tranny application, so I want to swap out the computer controlled dist. and carb. for a non-computer controlled set-up.
I doubt if the aircleaner will be removed from the carb during inspection, but the 81 dist has the coil on top which would be noticeable if it's replacement was different. I am partial to the Quadjet, Eldebrock is ok, but smell-no to the hOLLYS.
This squit is wearing me out! I would appreciate any and all suggestions
thanks, jim
ps: there is no tailpipe or any other testing or test.
hypertech makes one. You can also get a custom one burned for between 100and 150 dollars. With a custom you can leave all the smog stuff on just use blockoff plates and so on and the computer will not see them.
I got a 4spd chip from hypertech when my ECM went south and killed the original. If you are not going to far from stock it is a nice setup. IMHO the visual test is meaning less but one of the hardest to pass if you want to modify you car
thank you very much for your imput! Mr. L, actually WHO will burn me a new PROM? A few friends have also said this , but no one knows WHO does this or WHO I can call.
Stickboy, hypertech requires you to run minimum 93 octane with their chip. With gas at $3/gal, no thanks; I want to stick w/my 87 which the car runs fine on. I thought Hypertech would be my ticket until I found that out.
Thanks again, jim

I wasn't aware of that, however my comperssion was bumped up to 10:1 and I was running 89 in it with only occasional pinging.
