BB chevy, internal or external balance????
1978 GMC PK, 3/4 ton, is what it came out of. I tried to mate
up my 700R-4 to it and the flex plate would not work with
the torque converter. I grinded the holes bigger, and now it shakes
like its unbalanced. are they internal or external balanced??????
and how do I get a flywheel that will work with a 700R-4 conveter??
and how do i find out if its internal or external balanced???

THANKS all
427 - Internal
454 - External
For what it's worth if you plan on building that motor to make any power that 700R won't last long. This is why ALL 454 trucks came standard w/ 4L80E. My 700R4 didn't hold up on my 383 and that was a small block.
Take a quick look at the harmonic balancer. On an externally balanced engine the balancer (backside) will have material removed. If you can get a good look at it, it will be obvious. The internally balanced engines have a symmetric balancer.

I know 700's are not strong at all in stock form, but the motor
is all stock, so I hope I don't have a problem
Only the small block 400 and BB 454 were external balanced.
The flex plate was balanced with the assembly.
When you opened up the holes it went out of balance.
You should be able to take the plate to a good machinist and he can measure the weight on the balancer that is on it to make another one.
Don't start it with the shaking it has, it can wreck the trans pump and ruin the rear bearing.

The flex plate will have a counter balance weight welded to it on the external balanced engine. The weight will be at the outer edge near the ring gear it is a large piece of steel so it is easy to see. The internal balanced engine will not have the large weight add.
I just bought another flex plate for my car I bought it from Oreilly's it has both bolt patterns one for the TH350 and one for the TH400. I am not sure if the 700r has the same bolt patern as the TH350 I think it does maybe someone that knows will chime in. If you need I can get the part number off of the one I have for you.

I bought mine from them to for $39.00. the bolt pattern did not even
work for the 350... I wonder if they gave me the wrong one..
the trans was in the truck already, and the motor was out, after I bolted everything up and the converter bolts were the last thing for me to do, WHAT DO YA KNOW, they would not line up. So I just grinded the bolt holes bigger.
