I have a 72 Vette with a bad frame, I found a 78 rolling frame for sale .Is the frame the same except for the front and rear bumper mounts? Will it work????
Most likely you would register the car with the VIN # on the body. The serial number is supposed to be stamped on the frame also, but on my frame at least the number is lost to rust pitting. I doubt many DMV people are going to go crawling around under a 30 year old car looking for discrepancies. As long as you have a bill of sale for the new frame you should be fine.

It should work fine. If the last 18 inches of your frame is good you can take some good measurements and just swap that area. Cut the 78 and add on your 72. With some simple patches to match the thickness discrepency no one will ever know if you do it on the top side of the frame. On the horns you will need to drill some new holes for the bumper brackets.
As stated above...the numbers are usually long gone and few inspectors would waste time checking unless something seemed fishy with the paperwork. And if it is already registered then absolutely no problem.
From some recent posts I understand that the VIN is supposed to be located on the top of the frame where it arches over the driver's side wheel. I don't think you could see it without a mirror on an assembled car. I have literally been over every inch of my frame recently and there is no sign of a VIN number. The area above the wheels is not severely rusted but there is enough roughness to have obliterated any numbers that may have been stamped there.
